diy elf dress up for kids

Why stick with the elf yourself app when you can elf yourself in real life in a way cuter, heartfelt way. Here is how I made these super sweet elf accessories.

What you'll need:

For the HAT

  • felt in green or red (hat color)

  • wired ribbon (hat band)

  • thread to match

  • pattern

For the COLLAR

  • white faux fur

  • hook and eye

  • cotton fabric in a festive print

  • pattern ((I used this pattern and instructions from Tilly and the Buttons))

  • sewing machine

For the SHOE POMS

  • shoe clips

  • felted wool pom-poms in red, green, or white. I used 1 1/4 inch.

  • thread to match pom color

  • fabric glue and hot glue gun with glue sticks

INSTRUCTIONS:

Collar:

Print off Tilly's collar pattern and follow her instructions with your faux fur and holiday cotton to create a sweet elf collar that can be worn over any outfit.

Hat:

  1. Print off the hat pattern. You need to print two of the triangle shapes and then cut them out and tape them together to create one half circle.

  2. Pin the pattern to your felt and cut out one piece.

  3. Cut a length of wired ribbon about 23 inches long. Now you'll shape the ribbon by scrunching it along the wire. You'll scrunch more on one side than the other to create a slight curve. The curved shape helps it fit the curve of the hat! Shape to fit. Leave the wire in the ribbon but cut off any excess! The wire also helps keep the hat structured.

  4. Pin the ribbon to the felt on the side you want to be the outside... sometimes felt has a prettier side.

  5. Sew the ribbon to the felt.

  6. Fold the hat in half with the right sides inside. Sew up the back seam. Clip the point. Turn hat right side out. Shape slightly with your hands.

  7. Tuck in any wire into the hat seam so that your elf doesn't get poked.

Shoe Poms:

  1. Using a hot glue gun, glue a shoe clip to each pom. You glue down the side with the two loops. Do not get glue in the loops though.

  2. After the glue hardens sew the loops on the pom. The glue is just there to help hold the pom. After you tie off each loop use a small dab of fabric glue to seal the knots on the thread.

  3. Clip onto your shoes!

You're done! Maybe make a sugary snack to celebrate!

Please let me know if you need any help with the pattern! Have fun crafting but only use this pattern for yourself and to create gifts for friends and family. Do not sell any part of the instructions, pattern, or finished elf accessories. Thank you!
