handmade poison ivy costume

handmade poison ivy costume

This simple costume is a great option for a last minute “handmade” idea. It comes together quickly and only requires a minimal amount of craft talent and tools. You can seriously have this done in a single day.

What you need:

  • a bodysuit… we used a pink ballet leotard

  • leggings or tights

  • faux ivy vines or similar leaves

  • Tulip color shot fabric spray paint in green

  • hot glue gun and glue sticks

  • eyelash adhesive

  • a wig

  • mesh glove or sleeve (optional)

What you do:

  • spray the leggings/tights (unless you can find them in green already - SCORE!)

  • spray the bodysuit. Re-apply paint until you get to the desired level of greenness. Your fabric will become VERY stiff. Don’t worry. After you wash it, the fabric softens back up. The bottle will tell you that it needs to cure for 24 hours before washing BUT I think I just let the items hang dry over night. And I have used this fabric spray paint and tried to immediately wash it out after a craft mishap and it didn’t wash out. Seriously, I threw the item in the wash immediately and that paint didn’t budge so… you do not need to stress if you are on a time crunch… just wash it, you’ll be fine!

  • snip leaves off the stems. I added paint to some of the leaves to give added dimension but you really don’t have to.

  • Hot glue the leaves onto the washed and dried bodysuit.

  • We applied small leaves to the eyebrow with eyelash adhesive. They can later be removed gently with a little oil.

And Voila! Poison Ivy!
